Bhubaneswar: Former Chief Minister and BJD President Naveen Patnaik expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the death of a 13-year-old girl by self-immolation in Gaisilet, Bargarh district—marking the fourth such tragedy in Odisha within a month.

In a post on X, Patnaik conveyed condolences to the bereaved family and called the incident “deeply disturbing.” He emphasized that these deaths are not isolated, but part of a heartbreaking pattern of desperation among young girls in the state.

“Their desperation is not just personal tragedy. Each tragedy reflects the failure to hear their screams,” Patnaik wrote, accusing the BJP-led government of failing to create a safe and supportive environment for girls.

The victim, who was staying at her maternal uncle’s house, reportedly set herself on fire over family issues. Locals found her half-burnt near a football ground and rushed her to VSS Medical College, where she later died. She allegedly named another girl as the reason behind her decision.

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation.

Patnaik called the incidents a reflection of systemic failure and demanded urgent action. “How long will the BJP government wait to stop this heartbreaking pattern?” he asked. The repeated tragedies have shocked the state and sparked calls for stronger protection and mental health support for vulnerable girls.
