Odisha To Construct 7 Barrages On Mahanadi River Basin, Says Minister

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Tuesday said that plans are afoot to construct at least seven new barrages on the tributaries of Mahanadi River to enhance availability and management of water.
Sharing this information in the state Assembly, Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Minister Rabi Narayan Nayak said discussion has been held with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi about the initiative to improve water supply in the state.
This apart, Odisha is engaged in talks with neighbouring Chhattisgarh to ensure the smooth and regular flow of Mahanadi River water into the state.
Stating that the issue of inflow of Mahanadi water into Odisha has been discussed with the Chhattisgarh government, Naik said the Chief Minister has also held discussion with the Chhattisgarh Minister as part of efforts to resolve the issue.
This apart, officials from both the states also held meetings to address concerns pertaining to the inter-state river water sharing, he said.
The construction of these proposed barrages is expected to significantly improve irrigation, drinking water supply, and overall water resource management in Odisha,
