Community Policing revolves round the principle of pro-active policing through people friendly policing practices. It is a philosophy based on the concept that Police Officers and Citizen work together in a creative way to help solve contemporary community problems. It fosters to develop a new relationship with law abiding people in the community, allowing them a greater say in setting local policing priorities and involving them in efforts to improve overall quality of life in their neighborhood.
During December,2014: To conduct people-friendly policing practices in Berhampur, a community policing service ‘Ama Police’ was launched in all the four police stations in the city.
There are three tiers in the Ama Police system and every police station would have an Ama Police Samiti. In the first tier, Havaldars would be appointed as Beat Officers, who would make house visits in the wards under a police station. The Beat Officers would work as a bridge between the concerned officers and the public. In the next tier, the Ama Police Samiti would function in every police station consisting of 15 to 20 members. It would oversee the work of Beat Officers and undertake activities such as night patrolling, befitting security systems, helping senior and disabled citizens, conducting awareness programnes and regular meeting with the public, etc.
Then, an advisory committee consisting of the district Collector and the Superintendent of Police would look after the developments in the top tier. One ASP of Berhampur is in charge of this service, and ADG who is the Nodal Officer of community policing in the State,
From our available source, in the month of December, 2014,ADG,Police Satyajit Mohanty inaugurated Ama Police, (the community police service), in Berhampur.
While addressing to Media, Mohanty said, the service aims at making the police more efficient.
Under the service, the jurisdiction of a police station is divided into many beats. A havildar or a constable acts as a beat police officer who will interact with the people of that area. The officer will be accessible to the local residents. “The police-people interaction will be more effective and it will help in better governance”.
Notably, Baidyanathour police station has 14 wards, while Town police station has 09, Bada Bazar has 12 and Gosaninuagaon has 05 wards. A havildar or a constable heads each ward as beat officer. Local residents act as Ama Police Samiti members.’Motorcycles have also been provided to the beat officers,he added.
