Workshop on Research Software & Other Academic Initiatives of DJMC at CUO

Koraput:The Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Central University of Odisha, Koraput, organized a 2-day workshop on 24 & 25 April 2023 on ‘Application of SPSS and Atlas.ti in Communication Research.’ Dr. Uma Shankar Pandey, Associate Professor, Surendranath College for Women & Faculty, University of Calcutta, was the Principal Resource Person for the Workshop.
The valedictory session of the Workshop featured the inauguration of recent initiatives by the DJMC. Prof Chakradhar Tripathi, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, CUO, was the Chief Guest; Prof. Sudhendu Mandal, Advisor, Academics & Administration; and Prof S K Palita, Dean, SBCNR, were the Guests of Honour.
The programme started with a Welcome Address by Dr. Sourav Gupta, HoD (I/C), DJMC, where he outlined that the department’s main focus was to balance academics with industry training. Dr. Gupta explained the recent initiatives, their purpose and significance, and outlined future plans like setting up a studio and upgrading the print media lab.
Prof Chakradhar Tripathi, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, CUO, inaugurated the Research Software SPSS and Atlas.ti, ‘Kantha Katha’, the wall magazine of the department, JMC Film Club, and Radio Mukti, a joint collaborative extension project where students of DJMC are facilitating inmates of the Koraput Circle Prison to produce weekly radio programmes. On this occasion, the Vice Chancellor unveiled the draft of a Communication-Indian Traditions & Perspective departmental book. The book is jointly edited by Dr. Sourav Gupta and Dr. P K Rath.
Prof Tripathi congratulated the Department, Faculty, and students of JMC and said it is truly an academic department where students get hands-on training. He advised the department to take up research projects in the area of Epics & Mythology and the elements of communication in it. Prof S Mandal applauded the Department and its stakeholders for being vibrant and active in research and media production. Prof S K Palita said the JMC Department sets examples for other departments. Dr. B K Srinivas, HoD (i/c), Anthropology, and Dr Kakoli Banerjee, Asst Professor, DBCNR, stressed the importance of interdisciplinary research.
Dr. Uma Shankar Pandey described the growing importance of data analysis and technology in research as envisioned in NEP 2020. He informed that the DJMC, CUO was the only public university department to have installed a licensed version of Atlas.ti. Prof Chakradhar Tripathi presented Dr. Pandey with a memento and awarded certificates of the workshop to the students of DJMC.
On this occasion, brief addresses were delivered by DJMC-Dr P K Rath, Dr. Sony Parhi & Mr. Telaram Meher faculty members. Ms. Talat Jahan Begum delivered the formal vote of thanks.
