Sate Govt Declared for 3-day State mourning
Bhubaneswar, (29/01/23): Odisha Health and Family Welfare Minister Naba Kisore Das was shot dead allegedly by an assistant sub-inspector of police (ASI) in the Western Odisha town of Brajarajnagar in Jharsuguda district on Sunday.
The shooter was identified as Gopal Das, who was posted in the Gandhi Chowk police outpost of Brajarajnagar. He had earlier served the Minister in the capacity of his personal security officer.
The Minister was stepping out of his vehicle when bullets hit the left side of the minister’s chest at about 12:15 pm. He immediately collapsed into the seat of his vehicle. A police inspector and a youth who were standing near the minister sustained minor injuries. Later, Das was captured by police.
Naba Das was immediately rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital in Jharsuguda and was later airlifted to Apollo Hospital in Bhubaneswar where he succumbed to injuries.
“The injuries were repaired, and steps were taken to improve the pumping of the heart. He was given urgent ICU care.
But, despite best of efforts, he could not be revived and succumbed to his injuries,” a statement issued by the hospital said.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik condemned the attack and ordered a Crime Branch inquiry. President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled the death of Naba Das.
A seven-member team led by DSP Ramesh Chandra Dora landed reached the crime scene at Brajrajnagar. The team comprised ballistic expert, cyber expert and officers of the Crime Branch. Arun Bothra, ADG, CID-CB also accompanied the team to supervise the investigation.
Meanwhile, the Odisha Government has also declared 3-day State mourning in respect of Naba Das.
