BERHAMPUR:  In an attempt to make police more responsible, accountable and people-friendly, special mobile phone numbers have been provided to all police stations in Berhampur police district.

The Closed User Group (CUG) phone numbers have been made operational since December 2016 basis in the strength of Superintendent of Police IGP (SR )notification and will facilitate communication with District Police Office ,Range office and other police stations.

Notably, as many as 11 phone numbers from 9437581415 to 9437581425 have been allotted to the IICs of BNPur, Gosaninuagaon, Town Police, Badabazar, Sadar, Traffic, Gopalpur, Golonthara, K Nuagaon, Digapahandi and Jarada.

A move came after it was complained on the table of a Higher Police Officer that the calls to the mobile numbers and landline phones at police stations were not attended (!)..

While talking with a Senior Police officer he said if any police official received the call, he could not confirm the identity of the caller on his landline and nature of the complaint, with the facility of CUG mobile phones, such problems would be minimised, in his reaction the Officer said that henceforth the numbers both CUG and landline will be functional round-the-clock. Besides, a register would be maintained to note the number of received calls by the IICs’of the police stations. In rare case with any unavoidable circumstances if a call is not received, complainants can call to the control room by dialling 112. They can also send messages to the mobile phone numbers of the IICs’.
