Special Narcotics unit soon in Odisha to Fight against Growing of Illegal Drug Trade,DGP Abhay

Cuttack:Odisha Government will set up a special Narcotics unit to fight the growing illegal drug trade in the State, DGP Abhay said here on Tuesday.


Talking to media persons,DGP,Abhay said the Special Task Force (STF) of the police will be strengthened further to fight against the illegal drug trade in the State.

The DGP said the Government has accepted the proposal of the police and sanctioned one SP’s post, three DSP-rank officer posts and 27 other new posts to strengthen the STF. He thanked the Chief Minister for sanctioning the new posts and the Government’s decision to set up a special narcotics unit to check the illegal drug trade.

Abhay said the STF has been doing excellent work in checking the illegal drug trade and it will be strengthened further. Sources said during the last four years, huge quantity of brown sugar and ganja was seized by the police in the State. Highest quantity of brown sugar and ganja was seized in 2020. Last year, over 35 kg of brown sugar and 1,549 quintal of ganja, the highest during the last four years, were seized by the police.

As per sources, 411 gram of brown sugar was seized in 2017, 1.45 kg in 2018, 2.64 kg in 2019, 35 kg in 2020 and 9.50 kg brown sugar was seized this year till April.Similarly, over 304 quintal of ganja was seized in 2017; 523 quintal in 2018; 618 quintal in 2019 and over 1,549 quintal in 2020.
