WORKSHOP ON BASIC MANAGERIAL & LEADERSHIP SKILLS

Bhubaneswar:Xavier University, Bhubaneswar (XUB) hosted a workshop on basic managerial and leadership skills for the principals of ICSE Schools in Odisha,at the Xavier City Campus on January 22, 2020. The first to be organized in the International Centre, the event started with a Bhajan facilitated by Prof. Fr. S. Antony Raj (Deputy Registrar, XUB) and the lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries.

This was followed by a welcome address by Prof. Dr. Fr. Antony R. Uvari, S.J. (Vice Chancellor, XUB). He spoke in depth about the event and the planning that went into it. He stated the agenda of the 2-day training programme as a workshop to develop basic managerial and leadership skills as well asto partner in building up Xavier University, Bhubaneswar. Fr. Uvari also stated how Jesuits make impossible things happen and lead by example.

Prof. Dr. Fr. E.A. Augustine S.J. (Registrar, XUB) addressed the gathering by formally welcoming the attendees. He discussed the events planned for the day, including a session with the deans of all the undergraduate schools of XUB, followed by a campus tour and a cultural programme.

Fr. Uvari started the first session of the training with a questionnaire on Situational Leadership. He opened the floor for a discussion on “Are Leaders Born or Made?” thus, prompting excellent points from the attendees. Fr. Uvari further elaborated on the difference between leadership and management, stating how management is a big circle and leadership is a subset of that circle. He quoted “Leaders are people who do the right thing, managers are people who do things right”. After elaborating on different leadership theories, he explained about leadership styles based on the attendees’ response to the questionnaire.Fr. Uvari concluded his session by saying “One should walk the talk. Visioning and integrity should come from within”.

Dr. Fr. E. Abraham, S.J. (Former Director, XLRI) began the second session, on personality, by discussing the views of Freud, Allport, Erikson, Kelley, Jung, and other eminent personalities in the field of psychology. He elaborated on different personality indicators, namely Big Five Personality Traits and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Following this, Dr. Abraham asked the attendees to respond to a questionnaire on MBTI and elaborated on the contrasting characteristics in it. He concluded the session by asking the attendees to implement what they have learnt.

Fr. Uvari spoke about the training workshop, stating, “To move forward, leadership and personality play a key role and this workshop is aimed to enrich the attendees on those skills, so that they impart the knowledge they gained to the students which will prosper their lives.”
