Bhubaneswar: After a dramatic 36-hour chase, Commissionerate Police on Wednesday arrested four persons for kidnapping the son of a businessman at gunpoint from Laxmisagar. Ramrup Agarwal, a resident of Laxmisagar area, had lodged a complaint with Laxmisagar police stating that his son Ishan Agarwal was kidnapped and the abductors were demanding a ransom of Rs 30 lakh for his release.
Ishan, studying at BBA College in Bengaluru, had returned home during pandemic. While Ishan was having tea at a shop near Jharpada on Monday evening, three youths arrived at the spot, threatened him at gunpoint, bundled him into a car and fled the spot. Later, they rang up Ishan’s father and demanded a ransom of Rs 30 lakh for his release. The kidnappers had sent a picture of Ishan with a knife pointing at his neck.
Ishan’s father then sought the help of police. The police swung into action and formed four teams. The teams examined the CCTV footage of the cameras installed at the tea shop and nearby areas and conducted raids at different places. Police tracked the location of the kidnappers through their mobile phones and managed to rescue Ishan from a forest in Sunakhala area, Police Commissioner Soumendra Kumar Priyadarshi said.
Police said the adductors had divided themselves into three teams and maintained a distance of 20-30 km among them to avoid tracking by the police. The group, which had held Ishan captive, used to call another team, which in turn would contact the third team for passing on the message to Ishan’s father.
This constant movement of the kidnappers made it challenging for the police to track their exact location, Priyadarshi said. The police teams, which spread out to Khurda, Berhampur and Nayagarh, had to cover a distance of 700 km during the 36-hour long operation to rescue Ishan.
The four abductors have been identified as Ram Krishna of Berhampur, Santosh Rout of Sambalpur, Dhaneswar Patra of Nayagarh and Mustaq Ali of Khandagiri in Bhubaneswar. Three other aides of the accused are still at large, Priyadarshi added.
