FREEDOM FIGHTER AND POET NIRODPRAVA PASSED AWAY

Bhubaneswar:Eminent freedom fighter and poet Nirodprava Patnaik, wife of famous revolutionary poet Ananta Patnaik and mother of poet Amarsh Patnaik passed away on Friday morning at their Cuttack residence.

 

Nirodprava was the daughter of noted educationist Dibyasingh Patnaik, who was the first head master of the State to be awarded with President's Award for his contribution in the field of education. She was born in Dadhmachhagadia under Khurda sub-division of erstwhile Puri district in 1926.

 

Along with her husband Ananta Patnaik and his younger brother Guru Charan Patnaik she participated in freedom struggle and subsequently joined Communist Party of India. She was one of the founders of National Federation of Indian Women ( NFIW) under leadership of Aruna Asaf Ali, Bimla Faruqui , Dr Nirupama Rath and others and actively participated in women movement in the country. 

 

She was also known for her creative writings which were widely read and appreciated by the readers. Her literary creations included "Saantani", "Alodan" and "Mana Nirjhar". 

 

In 1911, Bhubaneswar branch of Utkal Mahila Samiti felicitated her with "Seva Ratna" award in registration her service for development of women in the State and outside. 

 

Her sad demise sent shock wave among the leftist writers and women activists in the State. Her body was cremated at Sati Chaura crematorium in Cuttack.
