GOPAL KRUSHNA MISHRA IS NO MORE.

  Prasanta Patnaik

"Gopal Bhaina " as he was called with due love and respect by all of us at the old bus-stand khati of Bhubaneswar suddenly deserted us and left for his heavenly abode on December 15, 2017 night. He suffered cardiac arrest. Bhaina left behind Bhauja ( Prof. Manorama Rath ) who taught history in Rama Devi Woman's College, a son and a daughter. His most beloved elder daughter who was married to young BJD legislator Debasis Mishra had died dew years ago in accident while cooking.

Gopal bhaina sported beards resembling I.K. Gujral who served as the Prime Minister of India from April 1997 to March 1998. Therefore some of us were calling him " poormen's I.K. Gujral " and very sportively he was accepting it with a smile.

I knew Gopal Bhaina since early sixties when Biren Mitra was the Chief Minister who brought out an Odia daily entitlled "Janashakti". I was a student of Ravenshaw College and my elder brother like Swarup Jena had joined as a reporter. Gopal Bhaina who had started his career in Junior Financial Service under Govt of Odisha had resigned and worked as the Administrator of Jagannath Ballav Math of Puri, because of his love for religion and culture. But finally he had to choose journalism as his profession.

Most of the journalistic works of Gopal Bhaina were indepth studies on art, literature. culture, religion, tradition etc. All his writings were very blunt and packed with facts. His memory was also very sharp and was a store house of knowledge for which I used to call him "leaving encyclopaedia".

He was a regular contributor to Dharitri, Samaya, Prajatanatra and many other publications. He was a regular visitor to our khati located at the OMFED booth near old bus stand. Many of us discussed various matters with him. He used to guide most of us like an elder brother.

This morning ( 16th December, 2017)  when young poet Kedar Mishra informed me about the sudden and sad demise of Gopal Bhaina I was terribly shocked. He failed to give me details. I contacted his cousin Mr Mahendra Mishra, publisher and promoter of Lark Books and also my most favourite Cartoonist Kamala Kanta Rath who also happens to be his cousin.

I had fought many times with Gopal Bhaina over his smoking habits. Even after he developed cardiac problems , he did not give up smoking. He was a person with strong determination and never accepted defeat till his last.
