CARTOONIST SATISH ACHARYA : WHO HITS HARD WITH A SMILE

By Prasanta Patnaik

Dated.25/10/17:I loved cartoons from my childhood and was a regular reader of "Niankhuntia" edited by versatule poet , story writer and critic Gosabarish Mohapatra . He was famous for his satires and was popularly known as Niakhunta Moapatra. Subsequently during my college days I came in contact witth great satirist Dr Ramchandra Mishra who was known as Faturananda. After completion of my post graduation from Ravishaw College Cuttack while persuing journalism as my career I vetured to start "Chandrika" a magazine devoted to news, features, art and culture. I was trying my best to publish some thought-rovoking cartoons in every issue. On many occasions I had to lift good cartoons published in Shankar's Weekly, Indian Express and other newspapers drawn by eminent cartoons of the country.

My love for cartoons continued and after taking over as the editor of "Sanchar" Odia daily, I could manage to introduce a daily cartoon drawn by an young catoonist Santosh Mohapatra. Cartoons in Sanchar were well acceoted and appreciated. However Santosh had to leave us to join a large publication house with very high salary.

But my hunger to enjoy good cartoons continued. My hunger almost came to an end when I came accross brilliant cartoons of Satish Acharya who is an Indian Carttonist from Karnataka.

In 2015, Acharya was featured as one among 24 thinkers named by Forbes India as the best India-based intellectuals who are well regarded outside India.

Acharya is a self-taught cartoonist without any formal training in art. As a student he earned pocket-money by contributing cartoons to Kannada publications like Taranga, Sudha and Tushar.[4] He studied MBA in finance from Mangalore University after doing BCom from Bhandarkar’s College,  , Kundapura.

After completing MBA, Acharya moved to Mumbai and started in an advertising agency as an account executive, but quit to pursue cartooning. He got his first break as a political cartoonist with Mumbai-based English tabloid Mid-Day.He started working with Midday as a staff cartoonist in 2003 and contributed to daily cartoon column for nine years.

Acharya's cartoon on the Charlie Hebdo Massacre   was regarded as the one of the most powerful cartoons on the tragedy by the foreign media and the cartoon was published in newspapers including The Wall Street Journals. The Times and The Guardian.

Acharya has written three cartoon books, MeinHum and AAP in English, Cartoonishta in Kannada, Negipuggi in Kundapra Kannada.

His cricket-cartoon book Non-Striker which was officially released on 31 January 2017  in Bengaluru.

I am reprducing here few hard-hittng cartoons of Satish Acharya, who fearlessly contribute cartoons .
