Odisha to get early prediction on lightning strike

Report;Bureau,Odishabarta

Bhubaneswar:The Government of Odisha is likely to set up Total Lightning Based Early Warning System (TLBEWS) which can predict the precise geographic location which is likely to be struck by lightning that too about 45 minutes prior to its occurrence. The aim of the move is to reduce death toll due to  nature’s fury.

The Earth Networks, a USA based organization, made a presentation on TLBEWS with Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi at the State Secretariat of Odisha.

Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are said to be already making use of this to facilitate dissemination of early warning through mass messaging and mobile-based application to the people of such localities enabling them to take suitable precautionary measures to save their lives.

Noted socio-political leader and the Chairman of SNSMT has welcomed this move taken by the Government of Odisha. He said “nearly about 400 lives on an average per year are lost to lighting hits in Odisha. Should this system really work in accordance to what is claimed, it will be of massive help to all of us in Odisha”

Additional Chief Secretary and Development Commissioner R. Balakrishnan, Principal Secretary Finance Department Tuhin Kanta Pandey and Special Relief Commissioner and Managing Director OSDMA Bishnupada Sethi too were present during the presentation given by Earth Networks.
