POLL- CLOSURE OF LIQUOR SHOPS; BERHAMPUR POLICE SEIZED LIQUOR SHOP IN CITY

Thursday, 18 April 2019 05:49 Written by

Report;Manoj Kanta Dash,Pranya Panda,Odishabarta

Berhampur,17/04/19: As the second phase Poll is  scheduled  on Thursday , authorities in the  Ganjam district communicated for  enforcing a strict 48-hour closure of liquor shops in Ganjam , partly to frustrate attempts by candidates to buy ballots with booze, a potent election-time blandishment for poor voters across the Ganjam.

Closure of liquor shops is routine during state or national elections. It is also a time to control for valued voters of the district, where politicians using liquor to buy votes is a common phenomenon. The Election Commission has been tightening oversight to ensure that candidates don’t hand out liquor and other blandishments to voters.

The Berhampur Police department haul around 216 litres of foreign liquor from Hansika Wine Shop, the entry point to the Berhampur Mahanagar.

“We made various seizures all over the Berhampur. The general trend is that distribution of liquor during this election has been very minimal compared to what it used to be earlier," said  Pinak Mishra,SP,Berhampur That’s also due to the strong stance taken by the Election Commission."

Alcohol is among the biggest revenue earners for most states, and rules governing alcohol and its pricing vary. Monitoring the movement of alcohol is a big concern for enforcement agencies tasked with preventing its smuggling’s,SP said.

“Election is one of the reasons (for the increase in smuggling cases), but the main reason (for the seizures) is that we have started a special drive and deployed all our staff for this," said BIshnu Pati,SDPO,Berhampur , in a telephone discussion.

Yesterday at late night our BN Pur Police team lead by Sub Inspector, Kaushik Majhi seized 216 ltrs of foreign liquor from Hanskia outlet at Khodasingi while three sales persons are selling in back door.
