Kolkata, 11th Aug 2019: The 8th joint annual conference of Endocrine Society of Bengal and west Bengal chapter of Research Society for Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) was held at Kolkata from 9th to 11th Augusta. The scientific content revolved around updates on various diseases pertinent to Endocrinology like Diabetes, Thyroid, Hypertension and other hormone related disorders. The main points of presentation and discussion were about recent scientific literature on clinical features and newer modalities of diagnosis and treatment of these disorders.  Around 100 expert guest speakers from across India were invited to deliberate on the said topics.

Dr Sunil Kumar Kota, young endocrinologist from Diabetes & Endocare Clinic, Berhampur was one among the 3 Endocrinologists from Odisha and the lone Endocrinologist from South Odisha to be invited to this prestigious scientific event. He was speaking on one uncommon endocrine disorder called “Autoimmune Polyglandular Syndrome”, where multiple hormonal disorders occur at one go in a patient. These disorders occur due to disorder in functioning of immune system ie body’s defence mechanism. They mainly include Type 1 Diabetes, Thyroid disorders, Steroid, Bone problems in addition to some infections and involvement of other organs like skin, gastrointestinal tract, kidney, lungs, liver, blood formation etc. One has to be highly judgemental in diagnosing all the disorders in combination. Else some of additional problems might get unnoticed and in the absence of timely and proper treatment, may lead to catastrophic complications. Dr Sunil Kota explained to the audience via a 25 minutes didactic lecture about the prevalence, symptoms and newer modalities in diagnosis by means of auto antibodies and genetic sequencing followed by upcoming treatment avenues like immunosuppressant’s. It was followed by an interactive question and answer session.

Around 2500 doctors from all over India, predominantly from west Bengal and adjoining states of Eastern and North East India attended the academic gala event. Dr Sunil Kota’s presentation was highly appreciated both by the organizers and the audience alike.
