Berhampur,13/06/19:Today, a review meeting for Janivili Project was held under the Chairmanship of Collector,Ganjam, Mr Vijay Amruta Kulange, in the presence of MP,Berhampur,Mr Chandra Sekhar Sahu,MLA Berhampur,Mr Bikram Panda BeMC Commissioner,Mr Chakravarti Singh Rathore and all line of officers.
During the todays review meeting two major issues were discussed;
Repair of road- L&T was instructed to repair the road by engaging additional teams. Road owning agencies such as BeMC, NH, R&B were asked to monitor the quality of the work. It was made clear to L&T that the work should not be a cause of difficulty to public during the rainy season. Road repair work to be completed in 2 weeks.
Disruption is water supply- there was some issues with water supply due to annual maintenance of janivili anicut by irrigation department. This restricted the flow of water to the intake well and thus affected the water supply. The work will be completed by 16th and the water supply will resume as normal. PHED was given instruction to inform people before hand in case issue like this arise.
This may be noted ,as a dozen high level meetings have been held in the last two years to review the progress of Janibili project in Ganjam district, meant to improve water supply to Greater Berhampur, its construction is going on at a snail’s pace.
As on date fury Berhampur gets water from the Dakhinpur reservoir, which is connected to Soroda reservoir. As it proved inadequate, during the 80s, the Rushikulya joint water supply project was constructed at Badamadhapur. However, the city still experienced scarcity of water, which becomes acute during summer.
In order to resolve the crisis, a third water supply project was sought and sites were earmarked at Janibili.
Janibili project got a boost when Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik laid its foundation stone in October 2013 and inaugurated just before the General Election,2019.
According to source, the tender for the construction work was floated after three years in 2016. The tender was bagged by Chennai-based M/s Larsen & Toubro and it involved a project cost of Rs 431 crore, including Rs 372.60 crore for works and Rs 58.70 crore for operation and maintenance.The work on the project was started officially on November 4, 2016.
The project entails drawing water from Janibili diversion weir through underground pipes of 58 km length and setting up of 100 MLD treatment water plant at Jagadalpur already completed.
Local alleged that it’s delayed only due L&T who is playing with the Governance and Public as a monopoly contractor. While it was planned to supply the water from the project to Aska, Hinjili and 54 villages before the General Election,2019.it not yet reached to Berhampur(?).
