Chatrapur, Ganjam,11/11/18:On the occasion of Diabetes Awareness week which is celebrated to commemorate 14th Nov as World Diabetes Day globally, Diabetes &Endocare Clinic, Berhampur lead by Dr Sunil Kumar Kota, Consultant Endocrinologist& Diabetes Superspecialist in association with Odisha Retired Employees Association & Senior Citizens Employees Forum, Chhatrapur branch, has organized aDiabetes awareness rally at Chhatrapur. Around 100 participants registered for the event, where Sri Brijesh Rai, IPS, SP, Ganjamwas the chief guest with Dr Priyanshu Pradhan, Hon’ble MLA, Chatrapur and Sri Ashok Choudhury, Ex MLA, Chatrapuras the guests of honour. Sri Brijesh Raihighlighted the importance of regular exercise and proper lifestyle in maintaining healthy life both in diabetics and non diabetics. Dr Priyanshu stressed upon diet control and a regulated life style. Sri Ashok Choudhury emphasized regular testing and specialist consultation to avoid any untoward situation arising out of Diabetes.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Kota underscored the theme of the event ie “Walk for Healthy Life”. Exercise is the corner stone of diabetes management, which helps insulin to discharge its duty even better and lower the sugar. Additionally exercise is helpful in reducing blood pressure, cholesterol, and improving cardiovascular (heart and blood vessels) function. Daily 30-45 minutes of brisk walk is essential. This is ideally achieved by covering a distance of 4-5 km over a period of 45-60 minutes. Dr Kota further elaborated that this can be accumulated in short bouts of walks carried out 2-3 times/ day with each bout consisting of a minimum of 10-15 minutes at a stretch. The elderly people who frequently have knee problems can undergo upper body exercises like banging of hands, rolling over from side to side etc.
An awareness video on Diabetes by Dr Sunil Kota was presented to the guests and was dedicated to the society. The awareness video was distributed amongst participants by social media. Dr Priyanshu Pradhan later on thanked Dr Sunil for his tremendous efforts to build up awareness among the people of Chatrapur. Dr Kota further thanked the guests and others for their active participation. Subsequently guestsflagged off the walk, where people participated with a uniform dress code conveying the theme and carried placards carrying the message of healthy living in diabetes. The rally started from upper bust stand and proceeded through main road, Rikapalli, Bada Jagannath Temple junction to end at Rotary hall.More than 100 people were subjected for free blood sugar and blood pressure testing there. Around 1500 diabetes educational pamphlets were distributed amongst the passing by people during the rally. Amongst others Sri Niranjan Tripathy, Sri Prafulla K Patnaik, Sri Brahmanand Padhy and volunteers from Diabetes &Endocare Clinic too graced the occasion.
