Kendrapara,24/07/19: The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) won the prestige battle and emerged victorious in the by-election to the Patkura assembly constituency in Kendrapara district.
The Returning officer announced the by-poll results after completion of the 17 rounds of vote counting. BJD’s Sabitri Agarwalla defeated BJP candidate Bijoy Mohapatra by 17,655 votes.
While Agarwalla garnered 95,162 votes, Mohapatra received 77,507 votes and Congress candidate Jayanta Kumar Mohanty got mere 2090 votes.
With this, Bijoy Mohapatra’s hope to become a member of the Odisha Legislative Assembly hit the roadblock once again. He had unsuccessfully contested assembly polls from Patkura and Mahakalapada constituencies in 2009 and 2014 respectively as a BJP candidate.
On the other hand, Patkura assembly once again embraced BJD. The ruling party has been testing consecutive success from the seat since 2004.
Meanwhile, BJD supporters started celebrations following the victory by distributing sweets and bursting crackers.
