Study helps solve riddle of Mekong River age and Tibetan plateau formation

Thursday, 08 November 2018 07:54 Written by

Report;Bureau,Odishabarta

Bhubaneswar,07/11/18:A Curtin University researcher is among an international team that has found evidence the Mekong River was formed mainly by climate and not tectonic forces, as is widely thought, and illuminated the long-debated age of the famous waterway.

In findings published in leading science journal Nature Geoscience, researchers collected rock samples from deep gorges of the Mekong River in the south-eastern Tibetan plateau and analysed them to gauge when the rocks cooled as a result of the river cutting its way across the landscape.

Research team member Dr Martin Danišík, from Curtin’s John de Laeter Centre, said the results were then compared to climatic records for the area.

“We analysed traces of uranium, thorium and helium gas within the rock samples to measure when the rocks, which formed deep in the Earth’s crust, rose to the surface,” Dr Danišík said

“We found evidence of a rapid incision, or narrow erosion, caused by a growing Mekong River during the middle Miocene period about 17 million years ago, which coincides with a period of heavy East Asian summer monsoonal rain over the south-eastern Tibetan Plateau.

“Our data not only provides new constraints on the highly debated age of the Mekong River, but also suggests that significant formation of the river in eastern Tibet was likely primarily driven by climate, namely intensified monsoonal precipitation, and not by tectonic forces as is commonly believed.

“This study contributes significantly to the debate of tectonic versus climatic causes of uplift of this area of the Tibetan plateau, which has been a topic of conflicting views for nearly two decades.”

Dr Danišík said the research findings suggested the Mekong River in its current extent and size probably did not exist prior to 17 million years ago.

“The strong monsoon precipitation period that occurred between 17 and 14 million years ago carved deep gorges into the south-eastern Tibetan plateau, which saw the Mekong River grow to roughly the size it now is. These findings overturn the hypothesis that the river incised in response to tectonic causes,” Dr Danišík said.

Dr Danišík was part of an international research team assembled by Professor Junsheng Nie from Lanzhou University in China.

The research was completed with funding from the National Key Research and Development Program of

China, the National Basic Research Program of China, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the US National Science Foundation, the Australian Research Council Discovery funding scheme and a Curtin Research Fellowship.

The Tibetan plateau is the largest and highest plateau in the world and the Mekong is one of the ten largest  rivers in the world.

The event witnessed participation from various schools such as Chetana school and Swabhimaan school to name a few. The journey to Xpressions-2018 could not have a better start and the stage is all set.

With only 10 more days to go, here are the events that are scheduled to make Xpressions eventful and memorable. The Carnival De Vogue, which is the Fashion Show competition, judges the team on their walk, creativity, elegance and overall performance. Apart from this, there are a host of other informal events to help the students which  include [email protected] (The Painting Competition), Pratibimb (The Face Painting Competition), Viraasat (Classical Competition), Flight of Fancy (A literary event) and MAXIM Mela (Marketing Research Event), LENSATION (the photography event), ZORB IT OUT ( a multiple round based event consisting of an online quiz, a treasure hunt and finally zorb football, an unique take on the traditional soccer game), and FINAL CUT (the short filmmaking competition for all the budding movie directors and celluloid enthusiasts out there).

Last year Xpressions had witnessed the ravishing performance by Farhan Akhtar. Performing for the very first time in Bhubaneswar, not just XIMBians, but also the whole of Bhubaneswar awaited his performance. It was a starry night, adding another feather to the cap of all the previous glorious Xpressions. To astound everyone again, XIMB promises of an even more entertaining evening this year. XIMB awaits to host Sunidhi Chauhan for the live performance on Celeblitz, the Celebrity Night. Just 10 more days left for the grand event to astonish the city of Bhubaneswar. NAVEEN LAYS STONE FOR ODIA VARSITY IN PURI

OPPOSITION NEEDLES HIM FOR NOT KNOWING ODIA

Puri,09/10/18:Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today laid the foundation stone for the proposed Odia University at BAKULA BANA in Puri district even as opposition Congress and BJP targeted the former for not knowing the language of the State.

Earlier, the State Government had proposed a budget of Rs 10 crore to be spent for establishment of the university. At least 25-acres of land have also been earmarked for the purpose.

During a review meeting last month, Chief Minister Patnaik directed the officials to ensure not a single tree was felled for construction of the university.

The proposed varsity would offer post graduate courses in Odia language and literature, besides facilitating research in literary criticism, evolution of East Indian language scripts, historical scripts, archaeology and translation into and from Odia.

Set up by five iconic leaders – Utkalamani Gopabandhu Das, Acharya Harihar Das, Pandit Nilakantha Das, Pandit Godabarisha Mishra and Pandit Krupasindhu Mishra – popularly known as Pancha Sakha, the Bakula Bana Vidyalaya was known as an ideal centre of learning in pre-independence Odisha.

Higher Education Minister Anata Das, Agriculture Minister Pradeep Maharathy, Puri MP Pinaki Misra and almost all the MLAs of Puri districts attended the foundation stone laying event.

On the other hand, opposition parties blasted the CM for not knowing the language of the State despite ruling the State for around 18 years.

In a press conference senior BJP leader Biswabhusan Harichandan came down heavily on Patnaik saying the latter hasn’t been able to talk in Odia despite leading the Government for last 18 years.

He asked the CM should take a pledge that he should henceforth speak with the people of Odisha only in Odia.

Odisha Congress chief Niranjan Patnaik advised the CM to enrol in the proposed Odia University to learn the language(?).
