Report;Bureau,Odishabarta

Kendrapara,10/09/19: More than a week after the bill criminalising triple talaq was passed in the Parliament, a man in Kendrapara district divorced his wife by pronouncing talaq thrice over the phone.

The matter came to light after the victim, Taksima Khatun lodged a complaint with Pattamundai police accusing her husband Sk Rija Ahmad of giving her triple talaq over the phone.

Taksima woman who was married to Sk Rija of Kalapahada village under Aul police limits November 28, 2017 said her husband called her over the phone on October 23 and uttered triple talaq thrice.

The victim further alleged that although Rs 1 lakh cash, 80 gram of gold ornaments and household articles were given as dowry during the marriage, Rija demanded Rs 1 lakh more.

The accused started torturing Taksima after her parents expressed their inability to pay up. Subsequently, Rija who works as a carpenter in Chandigarh of Punjab divorced his wife on October 23 over the phone from Punjab.

“I tried to contact him several times after he uttered the three words but he did not respond. As there was no response from him even after repeated calls, I was compelled to file an FIR against him. My husband is well aware of the judgment of the Supreme Court which banned triple talaq. He should be punished as per law,” said Taksima.

Acting on the complaint of the 24-year-old woman, the police registered a case and launched a probe.

“We have registered a case acting on the FIR and police are investigating the case,” said IIC of Pattamundai police station, Pramod Mallick.
