Bhubaneswar,17/09/19:Nearly 700 kg of cannabis was seized here and two members of an inter-state drug trafficking gang were arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) of the Uttar Pradesh police, officials said on Tuesday.

The seizure was made on National Highway-2 when a container truck loaded with the cannabis was intercepted in Rohaniya police station area after a tip-off on Monday, the officials said. The action was carried out by officials of the Varanasi field unit of the STF and Narcotics Control Bureau, Lucknow, they said.

“The STF was getting inputs on an inter-state drug trafficking gang which was operational in Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Odisha and Chhattisgarh, among other states and spreading illegal trade in UP also,” a Task Force official said.

Working on the information, we were tipped off about a cannabis-laden container truck, moving from Odisha to UP via Bihar, which was intercepted and a huge recovery of 697 kg cannabis made, the official said. The estimated worth of the seized cannabis in the black market is Rs 35 lakh, he added.

According to the official, the cannabis was procured from Ganjam district of Odisha and was supposed to reach Prayagraj, while the truck belonged to a man in Bihar’s Patna. The two accused arrested from the truck were identified as Lallan Singh and Ajit Kumar Yadav, both natives of Vaishali district in Bihar, the official said.

“They were booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. A case has been registered against them in Lucknow. During initial probe, they told investigators that they would get Rs 20,000 for each trip and that is how they got lured into this work,” he added.

DOORDARSHAN HAVING COMPLETED GLORIOUS SIXTY YEARS NEEDS PROMINENCE OVER PRIVATE NEWS-CHANNELS

New Delhi,17/09/19:Doordashan has completed glorious sixty years having given many prominent unmatched TV serials including extremely popular Ramayana and Mahabharat which in popularity-rating crossed boundary of nation with people even in neighbouring Pakistan, Nepal and other countries glued to TV-screens during telecast of these ever-educative epic-serials. Curfew-like situation used to be in India during telecast of these TV serials.

It is good that Dordarshan still telecasts programmes of national importance like those held in Rashtrapati Bhawan and Sansad Bhawan at very special occasions. Private TV channels running purely for increasing TV-ratings never care for quality-programmes or unbiassed news-bulletins. Rather these private TV-channels are badly harming viewers by making them TV-addicted through never-ending Tv-serials where recently one of such Tv-serial crossed 3000th episode.

It should be made compulsory for every private TV news-channel to telecast at least one daily prime-time news-bulletin followed by some news-based programme like Parliament-News with video-clippings for say just half-an-hour say at 8 pm. Feasibility for compulsorily live-telecast of some very special TV programmes from Doordarshan by all private TV channels like those held at Rashtrapati Bhawan and Sansad Bhawan.

Consolidated and massive GST-reforms with new tariff-plan necessary rather than frequent changes for voluntary tax-compliance and root-out tax-evasion

New Delhi,17/09/19:GST-council is going to held its 37th meeting on 20.09.2019 at Goa. It is indeed strange that every meeting of GST-council has witnessed some change or other in a short spell since GST-system was introduced in India on 01.07.2019 clearly establishing that the system is not yet perfectly tuned in, perhaps because of every-confusing multiple tariff-system where commodities of same nature like sweets, namkeens, biscuits are taxed differently. Moreover system is very cumbersome and prone to tax-evasion because of Input-Tax-Credit system, as even pointed out by Comptroller and Auditor General of India.

Complete overhaul of GST-tariffs should be there replacing GST-slabs of one-fourth, three, five, twelve, eighteen and twenty-eight percent by just two tariff-slabs of ten and thirty percent. Some more commodities mainly used in production-stage (and not directly consumed) presently placed under five-percent tariff can be shifted to zero-percent slab, while some commodities of long-term use be shifted to 30-percent slab suggested to replace 28-percent slab. Rest others (except those attracting cess) may be placed in newly suggested ten-percent slab. Cess should be replaced by additional GST-slabs in multiples of 50-percent slabs with petrol-diesel also under GST-system.

With such rational revision, tax-evading Input-Tax-Credit ITC system may then be retained only for trading, and abolishing from manufacturing and service sector thus further compensating loss if any due to abolishing of 18-percent GST-slab.
