State level Diabetes Symposium for Doctors of South Odisha at Berhampur by DIABETES & ENDOCARE Clinic 



Berhampur Dated 27th Aug 2017: Diabetes & Endocare Clinic, Berhampur today has organised a day long scientific symposium on management options for Diabetes. Doctors from South Odisha participated in this event at hotel Mayfair, Gopalpur, organized by Dr Sunil Kumar Kota, Consultant Endocrinologist from Diabetes and Endocare Clinic. Prof Dr R K Das, Ex Head, Dept of General Medicine, MKCG Medical College was the chief guest with Prof Dr P C Sahu, Ex Head, Dept of General Medicine, MKCG Medical College; Prof Dr R J Dash, Ex Head, Dept of Endocrinology, PGIMER, Chandigarh; Prof Dr L K Meher, Dean cum Principal, Balangir Medical College; Dr Alok Kanungo, Director, KIDS, Bhubaneswar and Prof Dr Subash Ch Mahapatra, Head, Dept of General Medicine, MIMS, Vizianagaram  as the guests of honour for the inaugural session. Dr Sunil Kota presided over the meet in the capacity of organising secretary. Prof Dr R K Das highlighted the rising prevalence of Diabetes and called for enhancing the skills of practitioners to deal with these problems. Prof P C Sahu advised the audience to be watchful of Diabetes by diagnosing them early followed by timely initiation of treatment. Prof Dr R J Dash, Prof Dr L K Meher and others opined that these scientific symposia would help updating the knowledge of treating physicians on various modalities of diabetes management including the basic science, recent drugs and upcoming modalities. There were 20 different topics on both oral and injectable forms of therapies for diabetes management divided over 5 sessions. These were delivered by eminent Endocrinologist and diabetologist speakers from Berhampur, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. 


Diabetes Management has come a long way from oral & injectable drugs. Earlier drugs were associated with weight gain and hypoglycaemia (low sugars). The newer are devoid of these side effects. Additionally they protect our heart, kidneys and lower BP, cholesterol. The newer insulins are useful in better control of sugars and better quality of life. Additionally audience were appraised of upcoming treatment options like insulin pump, weekly once oral and injectable drugs etc. In total around 150 doctors from Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Nabarangpur attended the workshop.



Additionally Dr Sunil Kota revealed his plans of undertaking blood sugar testing for officials and general public from different sectors to detect the undiagnosed cases. Prof Dr P C Sahu lauded the efforts by Dr Sunil to educate both doctors and general public and requested him to further carry on with his awareness activities for people from various sectors. Lastly Dr Sunil Kota extended vote of thanks to the guests, chairpersons, speakers, volunteers and media personnel to conclude the session.
