355 stones removed from woman’s gallbladder at Apollo Hospital

Bhubaneswar, 08.04.2017: The General & Laparoscopic Surgery Department of Apollo Hospitals, Bhubaneswar has added another feather to its cap by removing 355 gall stones of different sizes from the gall bladder of 40 year old women on 05.04.2017 morning.

The woman had been suffering from recurrent abdominal pain for last 4-5 months with decreased appetite. After conducting tests and ultrasound abdomen acute infection of gallbladder with multiple gallstones was detected. She was operated by laparoscopic/keyhole surgical method for removal of gallbladder by team of doctors led by Dr Tanmay Panda, Laparoscopic Surgeon and Anesthesiologist Dr Saumitra Sathpathy at Apollo Hospitals, Bhubaneswar.

“Gall stones are made of cholesterol and salt that form in gallbladder and laparoscopic/ minimal access surgery is the latest method for the removal of gallbladder stones. Removing such a huge number of stones from a single patient is unexpected” said Dr Tanmay Panda, laparoscopic surgeon. She has recovered well and got discharged today.

In "keyhole" surgery to remove the gallbladder, four small incisions are made around the abdomen, including one in the navel through which a small high definition video camera is inserted. Guided by the camera images on a video screen, other tiny instruments are inserted through the other incisions and diseased gall bladder is removed.

Apollo Hospital Bhubaneswar is now at par with higher centers of its group in other metro cities because of its advancement in laparoscopic surgeries but with affordable cost.  The General & Laparoscopic Surgery Department of Apollo Hospitals, Bhubaneswar with state of the art infrastructure, is one of the few centres in Eastern India to do such Laparoscopic surgeries, said Dr Panda. He further opined that people should be aware of such facilities to avail the benefit.

Congratulating Dr. Panda for his staggering achievement, Regional CEO of Apollo Hospitals, Odisha & Chhattisgarh Sri Sudhir M. Diggikar said that “Apollo Hospitals, Bhubaneswar has contributed to the healthcare space in the state over the last 7 years of its existence.
