Seminar on Thyroid disorders in Pregnancy




Berhampur, 13th Feb 2018: In India around 10-15% of pregnant women suffer from thyroid disorders. It is associated with complications both in the mother and the child. In order to scientifically update the gynaecologists of Southern Odisha about these disorders, Berhampur Obstetrics & Gynecology Society (BOGS) did organize a workshop at the seminar hall of department of Obstetrics & Gynecology (O &G), MKCG Medical College, Berhampur.  Prof Dr Bharati Mishra, Head, Dept of O & G presided over the meet in the capacity of president, BOGS. Dr Sunil Kumar Kota, Endocrinologist from Diabetes & Endocare Clinic, Berhampur was invited as the resource person cum speaker. Dr Kota explained about the causes, Symptoms, complications and treatment of the thyroid disorders to the audience.


Thyroid hormones are essential for both the mother and the fetus, where it is responsible for physical, mental and sexual growth of the baby. Hypothyroidism is more common in pregnancy than hyperthyroidim. It is detected by thyroid function test including T3, T4, TSH and Anti TPO Antibody. Dr Kota explained that, in uncontrolled and undetected cases, there can be hypertension, miscarriage, preterm labor, bleeding, anemia, intrauterine growth retardation, sometimes death. In the baby, it can give rise to poor physical growth, abnormal brain development, jaundice, deafness. However with proper treatment and timely testing, one can avoid all these complications. Dr Sunil Kota asked the gynaecologists to do thyroid function testing and blood sugar estimation in all pregnant women at their first visit itself and again in the newborn between 3-5 days of birth. Around 70 gynecologists and post graduate students engaged Dr Kota in an interactive question and answer session at the end. 


Lastly Prof Dr Subhadra Mangu, felicitated Dr Sunil Kota with a token of appreciation. Dr Indira Palo, secretary, BOGS profusely thanked Dr Kota for his teaching and concluded the session by extending vote of thanks to all concerned.
