EIGHT FAKE NAXALS ARRESTED BY RAYAGADA POLICE

Report;Amulya Nisanka,Odishabarta

RAYAGADA, (11/04/2017) A gang of fake Maoists, that had spread terror in Rayagada and Kalahandi districts, has been busted by Rayagada police. Eight members of the gang have been arrested for demanding ransom from contractors, businessmen and government employees of both the districts. The arrests were made on Monday.

They are Trinath Mahanandia (30), Bali Majhi (37), Balaram Naik (26), Suresh Mahandia (27), Bishikeshan Sahu (30), Mohan Sahu (35), all belonging to Kashipur block and Senapati Roy (46) of JK Colony in Rayagada town and a woman, Sabitri Karkaria (30) of Kalyansinghpur block. Members of the gang were allegedly extorting money in the names of Umakanta, secretary of Bihar-Jharkhand-North Chhattisgarh committee and Manjula, a commander of CPI (Maoists) outfit. Except Sabitri, all other members of the gang had criminal cases registered against them in various police stations of Rayagada district. Police have seized seven mobile phones from them.

Informing this to media persons on Tuesday, SDPO Y Jagannath Rao said during interrogation, the accused confessed to have recently extorted `one lakh from Fakir Behera, a Gram Rozgar Sevak of Mallibuja panchayat of Kalahandi district; `70,000 from a contractor, Lenka; `90,000 from Khageshwar Naik; `50,000 from Bijay Naik; all belonging to Lanjigarh. They had also put up fake Maoist posters in Sikarpai village under Kalyansinghpur police limits in Rayagada district recently.

The criminals, however, ran out of luck when Rayagada police traced the numbers of two of the members while they were making ransom calls to JK Paper Mills vice-president PK Suri and general manager Santunu Mohapatra.

Police said the gang was carrying on its operation for the past few years in both the districts as many of the victims never filed a police complaint out of fear. On March 24, a contractor, Kashinath Lenka, who is working in Kashipur block, lodged a police complaint against some criminals demanding ransom from him.

In February, Suri and Mohapatra had also received similar calls. Police were, however, not able to trace the numbers as the mobile phones were immediately switched off. On Monday, the JK Paper Mills officials received the extortion calls again and informed police, who could trace the numbers of Senapati Roy and Mohan Sahu. A police team was formed comprising Chandili, Kashipur, Kalyansinghpur and Rayagada police led by the SDPO, who nabbed Senapati from JK Colony and Sahu from Kashipur. The information provided by them during interrogation led to the arrest of other members of the gang.

The SDPO informed that some other persons are also involved in the gang and efforts are on to arrest them.
