Diabetes Awareness Rally by Diabetes & Endocare Clinic at Berhampur




Berhampur,14/11/17:On the occasion of National Pharmacy Week and World Diabetes day, Roland Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Diabetes & Endocare Clinic, Berhampur lead by Dr Sunil Kumar Kota, Consultant Endocrinologist, has organized a Diabetes awareness rally at Berhampur. Around 200 participants registered for the event, where Sri Ghanshyam Upadhyay, IG, Southern range was the chief guest with Smt K Madhavi, Mayor, Berhampur Municipal Corporation; Sri Sidhharth Shankar Swain, SubCollector, Berhampur; Dr Saroj Mishra, CDMO, Ganjam; Sri Sanatan Panda, District Education Officer, Ganjam and Smt J Jayalakshmi, Chairperson, Roland Institutes as the guests of honour. Sri Ghanshyam Upadhyay highlighted the importance of regular exercise and proper lifestyle in maintaining healthy life both in diabetics and non diabetics. Sri S S Swain stressed upon diet control and a regulated life style. Mrs K Madhavi highlighted the theme of this year as “Women and Diabetes” and called upon the ladies to take care of themselves for greater good of the society. Addressing the gathering, Dr Kota underscored the theme of the event ie “Walk for Healthy Life”. Exercise is the corner stone of diabetes management, which helps insulin to discharge its duty even better and lower the sugar. Additionally exercise is helpful in reducing blood pressure, cholesterol, and improving cardiovascular (heart and blood vessels) function. Daily 30-45 minutes of brisk walk is essential. This is ideally achieved by covering a distance of 4-5 km over a period of 45-60 minutes. Dr Kota further elaborated that this can be accumulated in short bouts of walks carried out 2-3 times/ day with each bout consisting of a minimum of 10-15 minutes at a stretch. The elderly people who frequently have knee problems can undergo upper body exercises like banging of hands, rolling over from side to side etc. Dr M E Bhanoji Rao, Principal, Roland Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences stressed upon the theme of this year’s National Pharmacy week “Know you medicines; Ask your pharmacist” and called upon budding pharmacists and the people at large to always be vigilant on self medication and unnecessary therapy.



An awareness video on Diabetes by Dr Sunil Kota was presented to the guests and was dedicated to the society. Dr Saroj Mishra later on thanked Dr Sunil for his tremendous efforts to build up awareness among the people of Berhampur. Dr Kota further thanked the guests and others for their active participation. Later on, guests flagged off the walk, where people participated with a uniform dress code conveying the theme and carried blue coloured balloons 7 placards carrying the message of diabetes and pharmacy week. The rally started from Ramalingam Tank Road and proceeded through SNT Road, Giri Market, Sanobazaar, Powell street, Diamond Tank Road and BeMC road. Around 2000 diabetes educational pamphlets were distributed amongst the passing by people during the rally. Some other dignitaries like Dr E Padmanabha Rao, President, IMA; Dr Sarat Chandra Mahanty, President, RSSDI, Odisha State Chapter; Dr B N R Subudhi, Head, Ophthalmology, MKCG Medical College and Dr M E Bhanoji Rao, Principal, Roland Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences too graced the occasion.
