Bhubaneswar,07/03/18: “Menstrual Hygiene education is a basic right of every girl by virtue of their birth, there should be sufficient and efficient efforts to ensure this for all girls irrespective of class, caste, economic condition and physical ability.’ With the above vows, first ever Braille Book on Menstrual Hygiene was released here in the capital city. Dr Birupakshya Dixit, India head of Practical Action said, we are going to distribute the same among 2500 young girls in the state. He also wished, this initiative could be replicated by the government if they want.


Earlier the project had produced Audio book for visually challenged young girls and video books in Sign Language for hearing and speech impaired young girls of the state. More than 6000 young girls were reached through this initiative by Practical Action. These audio and video book and braille book has been prepared and distributed by We for You, youth run social venture in the city.


SunoloSakhi, a knowledge delivery project designed specifically to bridge the knowledge gap of Menstruation and adolescent hygiene practices; is serving more than ten thousand young girls in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. Practical Action, a UK based NGO has partnered with local CCWD and started this unique campaign ‘Sunolosakhi’ targeting the young girls and women. They have adopted 60 slums in Bhubaneswar and 21 slums in Cuttack in different phases where discussions have made the young girls much vocal and now they are talking about menstrual hygiene and better ways to deal with it. These young girls from the Sakhi Clubs created by SunoloSakhi are working as peers for others inside their slum and schools. This project is using radio as a medium to reach out to these young girls and addressing their queries live on air. With expert advice on a live phone in show, the knowledge gap is bridged now with SunoloSakhi.


Among other guests on the occasion, Jyotshna Rani Mishra, President, AnaSanghathitaShramika Mancha Odisha, PrangyaParimita Behera, Special Educator and Principal, Namita Devi Special BED College, Sasasiv Swain, Secretary CCWD, AbhayaMohanta Founder We4You encouraged the Sakhi Club members of SunoloSakhi and extended their future support to SunoloSakhi to educate more and more girls on Menstrual Hygiene.
