Jeypore,04/09/17:Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today dedicated Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital (SLNMCH) in tribal-dominated Koraput district, which would benefit the adjoining population of the area.

Addressing the gathering, Naveen said, “This college is another stepping stone towards Government of Odisha’s resolve to ensure inclusive, equitable and sustainable development in the state.”

With establishment of this college, a long awaited dream of the people of tribal dominated districts of southern Odisha as well as aspirations of thousands of students of the region seeking to pursue medical education has become a reality today, he added.

“With SLN Medical College in Koraput and PRM Medical College in Baripada, the total number of medical seats in the state has gone up to 850. We expect to add 200 more seats next year to cross the 1000 seats-mark,” the CM concluded.

The classes will commence from tomorrow and 100 MBBS students have taken admission in the first year.

As many as 22 professors and 28 assistant professors have been recruited at the institute for teaching the students.

After over 50 years, the state is getting a government medical college and hospital.

Notably, Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College at Baripada in Mayurbhanj district is scheduled to be inaugurated on Wednesday.

However, four Congress legislators with scores of party leaders were detained earlier today by local police for waving black flags following Patnaik’s visit to Koraput.

Congress MLAs Tara Prasad Bahinipati, Krushna Sagaria, Kailash Kulasika and Chandrasekhar Majhi were detained at Town Police Station for staging protest and waving black flags this morning.

“When the Congress was in power at Centre, it had approved the proposal and sanctioned Rs 186 crore for setting up of the medical college. The state government hasn’t contributed anything but is taking all credit for it,” Jeypore MLA and Opposition Chief Whip Tara Prasad Bahinipati said.
