Ganjam; River Rushikulya Ready to Welcome Olive Ridley Turtles

Report;Bureau,Odishabarta

Ganjam,08/02/18:To ensure safe mass nesting of olive ridley turtles at the Rushikulya rookery in Ganjam district, the forest department has decided to increase fencing along the sea coast by two more kilometres this year.

The turtle mass nesting is expected to start in a week or ten days.

Every year, a 3.5-kilometre-long stretch of the beach from Gokharkuda to Podampeta used to be fenced to stop predators from harming the olive ridleys during nesting and the eggs in their nests. This temporary fencing also checks olive ridleys and their hatchlings from straying towards land.

Visitors are not allowed to enter the net fencing so that human intervention does not affect the nesting process in any way. The few entrance points in the net fencing are only meant for forest department personnel, researchers and others who play a positive role in the conservation of olive ridleys.

Patrolling at sea is also continuing to check the entry of fishing trawlers to the olive ridley congregation zone.
